NSW: Exonerate NSW Minister, ICAC told

The Independent Commission Against Corruption has been told New South Wales FisheriesMinister EDDIE OBEID deserves to be exonerated over the controversial Oasis affair.

Submissions have been tabled today following the commission's inquiry into allegationsof bribery relating to the $1 billion Oasis project at Liverpool, in south-western Sydney.

It's been alleged a $1 million donation was sought on behalf of the ALP in exchangefor the removal of government hurdles to the project.

Counsel assisting the commission, DAVID STAEHLI, says no action should be taken againstseveral political and public figures implicated in alleged improper conduct.

They include Liverpool Mayor GEORGE PACIULLO, Fisheries Minister EDDIE OBEID and formerBulldogs chief GARY MCINTYRE.

Mr STAEHLI says in most cases he's concluded conflicting versions of the events makeit difficult to find any corrupt conduct.

But counsel for Mr OBEID, BRUCE MCCLINTOCK, says the commission needs to go furtherthan clearing his client on the basis of insufficient evidence and exonerate him fromany taint of corrupt conduct.

Mr OBEID says he's pleased with the submissions and looks forward to the commission'sreport, expected to be handed down early next year.
