NSW: IRC decision halts BHP outsourcing plan
Steel unions have claimed a minor victory in stalling BHP's push to outsourcing maintenance
work at its Port Kembla steelworks in New South Wales.
Australian Workers Union branch president ANDREW WHILEY says a decision from the New
South Wales Industrial Relations Commission is a setback to BHP's plans to outsource maintenance.
He says it also thwarts the company's attacks on the job security of steelworkers.
The IRC today ordered BHP to recommence negotiations with the steel unions and hold
off on outsourcing plans until July 6.
The Port Kembla steelworks has been at the centre of ongoing industrial action since
management announced last year that it planned to contract out maintenance repair work
at the plant.
Steel unions maintain the outsourcing plan will result in the loss of up to 1,000 maintenance
jobs.
IRC vice-president MICHAEL WALTON said while both parties have made substantial compromises,
the best option is for further joint working parties to discuss the outsourcing issue.
Comment is being sought from BHP.
