NSW: Man fires on police after stolen car pulled over

SYDNEY, Dec 9 AAP - A gunman in a stolen car escaped after firing a shot at Sydney
police officers who had stopped him for speeding.

The two officers escaped injury in what senior police today condemned as a "cowardly act".

The gunman later eluded pursuing police in Sydney's inner west.

Inspector Mark Farrell said two police officers from Ashfield Police Station stopped
a red Ford Laser in Culdees Street at Burwood Heights, about 2.10am (AEDT) today.

Insp Farrell said after the car stopped, the two police sat in their vehicle to check
whether it had been stolen.

While they were doing so, the driver of the car thrust his arm out of the window, fired
on the police and sped off.

The bullet hit a tree and neither of the officers was injured.

"I believe it's a very cowardly act towards authority and we're looking into the matter
very seriously," Insp Farrell said.

Police pursued the vehicle but the chase was called off in the neighbouring suburb
of Ashfield after the driver crossed to the wrong side of the road.

The car, which police said had been stolen in Kogarah, was located soon after in Hawthorn
Parade, in the inner-western suburb of Haberfield.

It appeared the driver had escaped on foot through a nearby backyard, police said.

The driver is described as being male and wearing a long sleeved shirt.

Police have asked any witnesses to the incident to contact Ashfield Police Station
or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
