Qld: Crime rates drop says Qld Premier
BRISBANE, Aug 3 AAP - The rate of motor vehicle theft and break and enters in Queenslandhad dropped considerably over the past two years, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie saidtoday.
He said new figures showed a 20 per cent drop in motor vehicle theft, while there hadbeen a 15 per cent drop in the number of break and enter robberies.
Mr Beattie said the figures from the Police Service also showed a continued drop inarmed and unarmed robbery.
He said a report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics earlier this yearalso showed that crime in Queensland was at its lowest level in ten years.
"The rate of homicide, unlawful entry, armed robbery, unarmed robbery and motor vehicletheft are all at ten year lows," Mr Beattie said in a statement.
"Preliminary statistics provided by the police service for 2002/2003 show this trend continuing."
Police Minister Tony McGrady revealed figures which showed that break and enter offenceshad dropped by seven per cent with 4655 fewer houses, shops or other buildings being brokeninto.
"Unlawful use of a motor vehicle has dropped by six per cent," Mr McGrady said.
Armed robbery had dropped by 17 per cent as part of the overall nine per cent dropin robberies of all kinds, while arson had dropped 13 per cent and homicides by two percent.
"These preliminary results prove we are living in a safe state," Mr McGrady said.
He said the results were a credit to the Queensland Police Service and to the commitmentof the Beattie Government to increase police numbers and introduce new policies to attackthe causes of crime.
